SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Michigan – Kyle Van Boemel picked up his first golf club at the tender age of 4, and he’s been swinging ever since, playing golf several times a week mainly with his dad, John, or anybody else who will drive him to the course.
With his dad up north for a guy’s fishing and golf weekend, Kyle, 11 turned to the next best thing, his cousin Ryan Bennett, 14, a member of the Romeo High School golf team.
On Sunday, April 25, Kyle asked his mom, Denise Van Boemel if she would give Ryan and him a lift to Windmill Ridge Golf Course, 12751 Big Lake Road to get in a quick nine.
Denise obliged and before she had even gotten to the end of Big Lake Road, her cell phone rang.
“They were screaming on the other end of the line when I answered,” Denise said. “At first I thought something was wrong, but I then realized they were celebrating –Kyle had gotten a hole in one.”
Kyle Van Boemel has been playi... Kyle said he teed off on the first hole, a short 74-yard par 3 using his 9-iron.
“I hit the ball well and it came down about 12 feet to the left of the pin,” Kyle said. With a fierce spin, the ball rolled to the right and directly into the cup.
“We couldn’t believe it,” Kyle said. “We were jumping up and down, screaming - we went crazy.”
With plans to someday join the Holly Broncho golf team, Kyle’s first “ace” probably won’t be his last.
“You have good days and bad days out on the course,” Kyle said. “It’s always a challenge, but that day on Windmill Ridge – well, that was definitely one of the good days.”
