HOLLY, Michigan - After losing three in a row to quality teams, the Holly Bronchos faced another good team Friday night at the horseshoe. But behind some strong senior leadership they rebounded, literally and figuratively, with a win over Lapeer West, 60-53.

Seniors Nic Stoll, Jared Plawski and Austin Hopkin combined for 30 rebounds to  help Holly move on after consecutive losses to Detroit Country Day, Kearsley and Fenton.

“Just trying to do whatever we had to do to win,” said Hopkin, known more as a shooter than rebounder. He finished with eight boards.

Stoll said, “We had to come back after those three games.” The athletic big man led Holly with 19 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and a steal.

After being down 21-10 at the break, West looked to pick up the pace in the second half and actually outscored Holly 14-9 in the third quarter. They attempted to turn it into a horse race (no not a pun) in the fourth but the Bronchos ran step for step with them outscoring the visitors 30-29 in the final stanza.

Holly was able to hold Panther star Cullen Turczyn in check while the matter was still in doubt. Much of the credit for that goes to Donovan Williams.

“Turczyn is a great player,” said Williams. “He’s very quick. He and Zeshawn Jones-Parker are both very quick.’

Turczyn did tie Stoll for the game high with 19 points, but almost all came after Holly took control for good early in the fourth quarter.

Broncho freshman Isaac Casillas came up big on two occasions, hitting three-pointers when West looked to make a run and get back in it. Several times the Panther s cut the Holly lead to six points only to see the Bronchos gather themselves and take control. Casillas was a big part of that.

“Coach (Lance Baylis) told me to take shots.  I just tried to spot up,” said Casillas.
With the graduations of Holly gunners, Justin Fowler in 2010 and Josh Fugate in 2011, the Bronchos have struggled to find a consistent outside threat all year. Casillas looks ready to fill those big shoes.

Baylis was pleased with way his team rebounded with this win.

Casillas finished with 14 points,12 on threes. Plawski added 12 and was a perfect six for six at the line. He had eight rebounds.

Hopkin had seven points and eight rebounds. Williams finished with six points.

Lapeer West’s Luke Knickerbocker has 12 points and David Price had 11.

Holly is off until a home meeting next Friday with Swartz Creek who dominated the Bronchos in their first meeting.  Holly improves to 11-4 in the league and 12-5 overall.

West fell to 7-8 in league play and 10-9 in all games.
