Holly's Nick Stoll dunks one o... HOLLY, Michigan - After a slow start, the Holly Bronchos used an 18-4 second quarter to literally run the visiting Brandon Blackhawks out of the horseshoe Friday night, 63-52.
The final score doesn’t really indicate the story of this game. Holly overcame a 11-9 first quarter deficit and then Brandon, down 12 at the half, tried to speed up the game with some aggressive full court pressure. It did not work.
Holly repeatedly attacked the Brandon pressure leading to easy buckets. The major beneficiary of this failed tactic was Holly senior, Nick Stoll.
Stoll finished many a fast break after Holly’s guards were able to push the ball through the Blackhawk press.
Stoll had a very good game. This is probably an understatement. The Michigan Tech bound senior finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks and a steal, not even giving him credit for the number of shots he altered with his six foot six frame.
“Coach told us after that first quarter to just play basketball and push,” Stoll said.
However, all was not rosy in Broncho land, though. Holly suffered a horrible night at the charity stripe. Although a lot of the misses were late in the game by inexperienced players, Holly coach Lance Baylis was certainly not pleased with the effort at the free throw line.
“We were lucky to make layup, after layup, after layup,” said Baylis. “We couldn’t shoot free throws, I’ll take the layups all day long.” Holly finished the game making only19 out of 41 attempts. But on this night it didn’t matter.
The future for the Blackhawks appears to be bright though. Brandon underclassmen, Dylan Morris, Alexander Bageris and Quinton Cook scored 30 of the Blackhawks 52 points. Bageris and Cook are juniors and the diminuitive five foot four Morris is only a sophomore. Bageris led Brandon with 13 points, followed by Morris with 11 and Cook with six.
When Holly went up 54-36 early in the fourth quarter, both teams substituted freely, leading to some uneven and aggressive play by the reserves and partially counting for the excessive amount of free throws taken by Holly. Do give Brandon some credit for “not packing it in.” The Blackhawks hustled to the final whistle, even though the path to the free throw line was looking a little worse for wear.
Holly’s Donovan Williams got Holly going in that key second quarter burst that put Holly in control. He finished with six points, including four out of four at the line.
Holly kept pace with Flint Metro League leading Fenton and remains one game behind the Tigers at 9-2 in league play. The will face Detroit County Day at home on Tuesday with a 10-2 overall records.
Brandon, undersized by spirited, fell to 3-10 in league play and 4-11 overall.
