SWARTZ CREEK, Michigan - Led by strong efforts from seniors Delaney Serra and Lauren Maher, as well as a great game from super soph  Allyssa Copley, Holly defeated the Swartz Creek Dragons in Genesee County Friday night, 50-49 in overtime.

Holly trailed most of the game but moved to a 40-37 lead after two Serra free throws. They then held a 41-38 lead when Creek’s Gabby Deering hit a long three-pointer to send it to overtime.

If Deering’s heroics weren’t enough, the Dragons’ Lauren Adas drained a long three of her own with 35 seconds left in overtime to cut the final margin to one.  Creek then had a chance for a win with a three-attempt at the buzzer but it fell off and Holly held on.

Holly could have letdown after either of the big threes from the Dragons but showed a lot of poise and heart to help them keep pace for the Flint Metro League title.

“Swartz Creek is a heck of a team, they made those threes, but we made those free throws when we had to,” said Holly coach David Hall, adding “This is tough place to play,” and “We were fortunate to win.”

Meanwhile, Copley led Holly with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. “We don’t give up, we play to the end,” she said.

The last couple of years, Maher has been Holly’s most consistent outside threat. Friday looked like it wouldn’t be a good night for the quiet senior, but when it mattered most she was definitely on her game.

“We talked about it at half time, we kinda’ had to pick it up ,” said Maher. She listened well, dropping in three second half three-pointers to help give Holly the edge it needed.

Another Holly senior, Kayla Skopek, had two big steals in the third quarter that seemed to jump start her teammates. Always hustling and using her quickness to frustrate opposing offenses, the diminutive five foot one Skopek was certainly instrumental in helping the Bronchos keep pace in the league.

Copley’s 17 points led Holly. Maher had 14 and Serra 10. Skopek added five and Brooke Harthun four to close out the Holly scoring.

Swartz Creek was led by Adas with 16 points, Autumn Henry with 14 and Deering with 8.

Holly now moves on to play at Clio on Tuesday, hoping to avenge a blowout loss at home earlier this year. The Bronchos are now 9-1 in league play and 11-2 overall. The Dragons fell to 5-5 in the league and 6-7 overall.
