Brooke Harthun is guarded by L... HOLLY, Michigan - Needing a win to remain in a first place tie with league rivals Clio and Lapeer West, the Lady Bronchos held serve Friday night using a strong start and a strong second half to beat the Linden Eagles in Holly, 38-29. After moving out to a 10-5 lead after one quarter, Holly struggled to score in the second. Not until with less than two minutes to go in half did Holly score, using a Lauren Maher three-pointer to help the Bronchos keep the lead at the break.
Looking at another slow start early in third quarter, Holly’s Brooke Harthun got them back on track with a long three.Fellow senior, Kayla Skopek, then took it from there with a three of her own and a steal and a basket, dropping in five points in less than a minute. In commenting on her important basket, Harthun said, “I just love that play. My teammates work hard to get me open. I think it helped to start our offense.” That it did.
Skopek hustled all night but was especially effective in the second half. In referring to her three-pointer Skopek said, “I was wide open on the top and I just hit it.”
Holly coach David Hall said that they are now in a different position with the rest of the league now that Holly is winning after years of struggling. “Our girls have worked real hard for it. The girls ahead of them set the tone,” Hall said.
The Bronchos Allyssa Copley had her usual strong game with13 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals, again making observers forget she is only a sophomore.
After Linden had cut it to 28-25 early in the fourth, Copley was fouled on a basket and hit the “and one” to help the Bronchos pull away for the win.
Maher finished with eight points. Harthun had two three-pointers and finished with six points. The Eagles, now 4-4 in Flint Metro League play and 5-5 overall, were led by Jordan Sargent with 10 points and Rachel Maxheimer with eight.
Holly hosts the Lapeer East Eagles on Tuesday night. The Bronchos are 7-1 in the league and 8-2 in all contests.
