Holly schools ready for students’ return

How quickly the summer has passed! The day after Labor Day, Sept. 7, the Holly Area School District will be back in session. At approximately 6:30 a.m. Sept. 7, Holly Area School District buses again will be traveling their routes. To our community members, please watch for students walking along the streets, as well as the buses stopping on their routes. Especially the first few school days, take a little extra time as you drive to work and allow for the buses on their routes. 

Throughout our school district, local businesses are accepting donations for school supplies for our students. To all the participating businesses and the individuals who donate supplies, thanks so much for your generosity. I can assure you all of the donated supplies will be put to good use with our students. 

At various meetings that I attend throughout the year, I speak of the generous spirit of our local communities, even in these economic times. For example, this past Friday evening, Holly High School hosted the Reunion With A Cause event. As of Tuesday, Aug. 17, more than $70,000 has been donated to this event. Given the current economic climate, such a total is simply fantastic. These dollars assist local community members in many ways. The donations help fund various services supporting Genesys cancer patients’ physical and emotional needs during treatment. One-hundred percent of the donations from this event go directly to Genesys cancer patients in our community. Kudos to everyone who made a donation to this very worthy cause. Kudos to Genesys Hospital for their continuing relationship with Reunion With A Cause. 

Congratulations to all of the Holly Area Schools. Each school received an “A” on its Ed Yes! grade; likewise, each school met its AYP (adequate yearly progress) goal. Along with our school district staff members, I want to thank our parents, students, and community members for all their efforts in making the 2009-2010 school year the success that it was. I look forward to the 2010-2011 school year being even a greater year for our school district and our communities. 

On a final note, thanks to all who had a part in bringing the Kelly Miller Circus to town. The smiles on the children’s faces, as well as the adults’ faces, were simply a delight. Perhaps a little bit of childhood remains in all of us.
