ROSE TOWNSHIP, Michigan – Red, white and blue illuminated the gymnasium of Rose Pioneer Elementary School on Thursday, as second grade students presented a Memorial Day Assembly to their fellow students, parents, grandparents, friends and veterans.

Huron Valley AMVETS Post 2006 presented the colors before the second graders led the audience in The Star Spangled Banner.

In preparing his opening remarks, Principal Michael Beattie said even he learned a few new things about Memorial Day.

“Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day – I’d forgotten that, but it’s true,” Beattie said. “It’s a day when we honor the men and woman who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.”

Music Teacher Sarah Manning led students in singing “As the Flag Goes By,” before allowing the second graders to show patriotic pictures they had drawn in a segment called “The Pride of Our Country.” Students sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” before winding it up with an audience participation version of “This Land is Your Land.”
