"Snorty" the Broncho is at eve... HOLLY, Michigan – The tradition of Homecoming is being celebrated this week at Holly High School, with Homecoming festivities going on all week, culminating on Friday as the Bronchos take on the Waverly Warriors.
Spirit Week This year’s “Spirit Week” consisted of Monday’s “Mix and Match Day,” where the students of HHS were asked to show school spirit by mixing up the wardrobe. On Tuesday, students could wear a tie and/or a bow to demonstrate Broncho pride, and on Wednesday, it’s the ever-popular pajama day. On Thursday, students can show their pride by dressing up as their favorite superhero or villain, and on Friday, it’s the traditional class color day.
Last week, students voted on choosing members of the Fall 2011 Homecoming Court. Chosen are Freshmen Maddie Gross, Prescilla Hoisington, Scott Humphreys, Sean Degnan, and Dino Vivanco; Sophomores Hannah Stiegerwald, Leah Moller, Josh Scramlin, Jeff Sophiea, and Tre Flores; Juniors Katie Elliot, Chatel Grugal, Dane Gardner, and Phil Samson; and Seniors Megan Incammicia, Brianna Rodriguez, Emma Alexander, Lauren Maher, Sawyer Kivari, Austin Hopkin, Eric McCallif and Sam Caldwell.
Homecoming Parade Friday’s Homecoming parade is slated for 5 p.m. in downtown Holly. Parade staging will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Holly VFW Hall, 201 Airport Drive, Holly.
Parade-goers will notice a big difference in this year’s class floats as last year’s HHS Student Council decided to take a one-year hiatus from float building efforts. Haley Street, a teacher at HHS and Student Council coordinator, said the students’ decision to forego floats was a multi-faceted one.
“The costs of the floats have increased each year with several thousands of dollars being spent on the construction of floats last year,” Street said. “With our troubled economy, especially in Michigan, we didn’t feel we could justify this ‘frivolous’ expenditure, and instead, we felt like this year would be a good time to give back to our communities by sponsoring local charities.”
In lieu of creating a full-blown float this year, Street said the individual classes will decorate trucks. “The decorations still get to the heart of Homecoming – the Bronchos beating Waverly, and class pride,” she added.
Street said each class was allowed to spend only $125 on decorations for their trucks. Additionally, Street said each class will make a donation to a charity of their choice. Each day during Spirit Week, Student Council will donate money to the charity of the winning class, and on parade day, Student Council will donate a dollar to the class charity of students choosing to walk in the parade.
Pregame Pig Roast The Holly Area Community Coalition and the Holly Athletic Boosters will be hosting a Pre-game Pig Roast before Friday night’s game, in the parking lot behind Holly High School directly following the parade. HACC event coordinator Mary Ann Vergith said the pig roast will continue through the 7 p.m. kick off at Broncho Stadium.
Dinner baskets will include a pulled pork barbeque sandwich, chips and a bottle of water for $5. Additional sandwiches can be purchases ala carte for $2.
All proceeds go to benefit the Holly Area Youth Coalition programs and the Holly Athletic Department.
