Monday will be a unique day in which we need to be as normal as possible while yet taking the time to listen even more to our students. No doubt exists but that the school shooting in Connecticut has impacted all of us. The incident is a grim reminder that we must be continually vigilant regarding school safety. Community members should always alert school officials if concerns exist regarding their school's safety.
I will be discussing and reviewing our safety procedures with local law enforcement officials, as well as garnering thoughts from you, regarding any reasonable enhances that we need to consider. Our school district personnel want you to know that the prime directive is always student safety. We have to remember though that no school is 100 percent impenetrable, but we will continue to strive for that goal.
Such a shooting reminds us all too vividly of the importance of our safety procedures and check-in and screening processes. As all school districts, we will continue to utilize our drills and lock-down procedures. This incident reminds us why we do not prop open doors. While we can never be absolutely protected against all circumstances, we do rely on all our staff and community members to ensure that we follow our own procedures.
The fine line lies with our wishing our schools to be as safe and inviting as possible while maintaining the optimal degree of safety for all within our school buildings.
Yet, sometimes, the scope and senselessness of such actions as this recent shooting defy description and understanding. Words simply fail us as we try to share explanations.
I hope that all of our parents and guardians have had discussions and explanations appropriate to the age of their children. Our goal on Monday and throughout the week is to maintain our normal routine in the classroom, but what can you as parents and guardians continue to do at home? Assure children they are safe at home. Make time to talk and listen to your children. Keep discussions age appropriate. Maintain your normal home routine. Lastly, never stop telling your children how much you love and cherish them and what they mean to you.
Thanks for taking the time to read this short note to our community members, parents, and guardians.
