HOLLY, Michigan – In a press release dated June 3, Holly Academy announced that it has been reauthorized as a School of Excellence by the Michigan Department of Education.
On Jan. 4, 2010, Michigan became the first state in the country to enact a “smart cap.” This allows charter schools that meet the law’s criteria of “high performing” or “beating the odds” to be eligible for reauthorization as a “School of Excellence” outside of the 150-school cap placed on state public universities. Reauthorizing a school as a School of Excellence allows quality charter public schools to be removed from under this cap, creating a vacancy through which a new school can be chartered. This smart cap allows for growth in Michigan’s charter sector.
For schools that operate some or all of grades K-8, the qualification for High Performing School of Excellence is a three-year average MEAP proficiency rate of at least 90 percent in reading and math. Holly Academy has achieved this qualification.
Holly Academy educates 788 students in grades K-8, offering all students Spanish and daily science curriculum along with numerous enhancement opportunities. Holly Academy ranks tenth among all Michigan School Districts on the 2010 MEAP results, and is ranked fourth among all charter schools in the state.
