DAVISBURG, Michigan – It was all about “talkin’ to the hands,” on Thursday morning as students at Davisburg Elementary School gathered in the cafeteria for some serious sport speed stacking.

Sponsored by the World Sport Stacking Association, sport stacking is an exciting sport whereby students up-stack and down-stack 12 specially designed cups called “Speed Stacks” in predetermined sequences as fast as they can. Stackers compete in relays and race against the clock.

Gym teacher, Jason McLaughlin asked students to demonstrate their ambidexterity, quickness and hand-eye coordination by taking part in STACK UP! 2011 – “a track meet for your hands at warp speed.”

The students joined thousands of other stackers across the globe, attempting to beat the Guinness World Record for the most people sport stacking at various locations around the world.  Last year, 316,736 stackers took part in the event – this year, organizers are shooting for 350,000.

DAVISBURG, Michigan – Two years ago, Lisa Bell Snodsmith, a Davisburg Elementary School teacher, wife, mother and dear friend to many lost a courageous battle with cancer. Having a preschool-aged son, she passed her love of literature onto her son, Kye, by routinely taking him to story hour at the Springfield Township Library.

In memory of her spirit and love for reading, Daviburg Elementary School is proud to establish the Lisa Bell Snodsmith Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship used to pay the fee for families that are not residents of Springfield Township, but would like to enjoy the library just as much as the Snodsmiths did.

Those wishing to make contributions to the scholarship fund are asked to send donations to the attention of Aimee Schwartz, Davisburg Elementary School, 12003 Davisburg Road, Davisburg, 48350. Donors are asked to write, “Lisa Bell Snodsmith Memorial Fund,” on the memo line of the check.

DAVISBURG, Michigan – The students of Davisburg Elementary School enjoyed a real treat on Thursday as celebrated author Josephine Nobisso visited their school, sharing stories she’s written, tips and information about writing, and many personal stories behind her books.

“After our morning session, I got all goose-bumpy because  Ms. Nobisso has good energy – great energy,” Principal Barb Bloom told students before Thursday afternoon’s presentation. “She has wonderful stories to tell you about her life, and her life as an author – and some amazing things about her book that I think you’ll enjoy very much.”

With that, Bloom introduced Nobisso to a room packed with third, fourth and fifth graders.

Nobisso has written over 40 children’s books, and chose to first share “Hot Cha Cha,” a book she wrote using straight and slant rhyme and wonderful rhythms to explain “the five W’s and How.”

veterans salute flag

DAVISBURG, Michigan – One hundred and fifty fourth- and fifth-graders and their parents from Davisburg Elementary School took part in Great Lakes National Cemetery’s fifth annual Veterans Day program Nov. 11.

Student enjoyed watching the Marine Corp League Flint detachment Presentation of Colors, and listened intently as the National Anthem was sung by the New Century and Grand Blanc High School chorales.

Additionally, the ceremony included a cannon salute from the Battery K 9th division and Battery D 1st Michigan light artillery Civil War Cannoneers. Students watched as military wreaths from each branch of the service were presented.

“The best part was a speech from General Peplinski of the Selfridge Air Foce Base,” parent Nancy Humphries said. “He talked about the need to honor all of our veterans old and new, and whether you agree with the war or not, they are all worthy of the highest respect and gratitude from all citizens for serving their country.”

“I liked that it took you back in time to see the veterans of WWII and others,” student Maris Humphries said.

Humphries said the Davisburg students were the first elementary school to ever attend the event.
