Shannon says: "That is great! I would love to see the library/media centers in the elementary and middle school levels receive some of that funding.
localyokel says: "A couple ideas that Id like to throw out there are to make it start later than 5 pm and to make it a little later in the month of May if possible. Personally, I work 40 minutes away and cant possibly get to the event by 5pm. By the time I can get to the event, the swag bags are all gone and there is no parking. Also, typically, Mothers Day weekend is a very busy time and people often dont wait until the last minute before buying heir gifts. If LNO was after Mothers Day perhaps local merchants would get more call for gift certificates that could be used for LNO - they could even market the certificates that way. And all the merchants should be advertising. So many have Facebook pages and websites and are not using them to their full potential. To lay all of this on the shoulders of Ms. Ponsart, with no budget and a committee that (frankly) sounds like a nightmare, certainly does not seem fair. How interesting that the lack of budget seems directly tied into the purchase and subsequent ongoing feet dragging surrounding "The Grey Lady". Hope the DDA listens to the remarks of the little people here on The Holly Express...we are the shoppers, merchants, home owners and often the biggest cheerleaders when talking to our friends about our community."

I agree with you, GoldenMama--the point being, you are still aware of the fact you get evaluations every 6 months. My position is a very public position, so I assume I am always under a microscope and it comes with the territory. To me, the public has a right to know, and have input as well because I work for the Community. I'm sitting in front of my Board every month. If there's a problem or concern, I want to know about it at that point--not six months or a year later. It doesn't fix the problem, it doesn't even make sense. Thank you for the courtesy."

Two50r22 says: "I'd like to know what these complainers think the DDA is here for. For that matter what the Board thinks the DDA's mission is, without having to look it up, if you could. The web page is so out dated you can't find out who is even on the board, looks like a collection of old and current government reps. The DDA is supposed to operate autonomous from local government, with minimal over-site. If any downtown hobby business men think the DDA is to pull surrounding tax funds to help them on their bottom line, Its time to look at you business plan son. I know the DDA spends a large portion of the budget on events like LNO or Dickens, but DDA organizers beware without the beneficiary of this generosity stepping up to carry the load, the whole works will come crashing down."

Darrin says: "Regardless if the event was deemed a success or not, a post-event evaluation should always be conducted/discussed to determine what went right and what could be improved for the future. That fact that this is such a big to-do full of accusatory finger-pointing is just plain silly. Every merchant and each person involved share in the planning, marketing, execution, and post-analysis of LNO. Stop pointing fingers and start working together!"

Jesse Lambert says: "Weather definitely played a part in having light attendance. However, as Sandra stated weather isn't the strongest variable when considering event attendance. There are a plethora of variables that effect attendance for any community event. I don't think moving committee meetings to a consistent date and time is necessarily a significant variable. At least not at this point in time. From my experiences with the DDA as well as several nonprofit groups, Janet’s comment regarding set meetings times represent more of a symptom than a problem. A solution to bolstering event attendance is consistent communication and volunteerism. The DDA has historically had trouble finding volunteer help since I was in my teens. It doesn't make much sense to have a set date and time if your present volunteer base is unable to participate. Flexibility is crucial to volunteers as they are donating their time and efforts. If the DDA had more volunteers, scheduled committee meetings wouldn’t be a bad change at all. There would always be people to attend the set meetings and to spread efforts and ideas. I'm all for community involvement at any level, but you can't force volunteerism into a mold. Not in a small community like Holly. Solid volunteerism and growth of volunteerism happens because those involved believe in the goals, objectives and efforts of the leadership involved. Increasing volunteerism is one of the strongest correlative variables when considering event attendance. Also at the top of the list is promotion and advertising."

guest0412 says: "I think the weather had a lot to do with it too. As for Bittersweet, sometimes I go in there but it's so crowded that it's uncomfortable to be seated in there.
C. Rankin says: "Or it can be relayed to someone that knows the location of that landmark. I think that even if the OCSD doesn't know where Hungry Howie's is located, they can certainly radio the Holly fire/police dept and let them know, "hey there's a problem at Hungry Howie's in Holly that needs police/medical assistance". Holly2003, is your concern that the OCSD might send that radio message to Fenton or Grand Blanc's fire or police department? I'm not sure what you mean when you ask, "how are they going to know what department to send to that call[?]...". Also, the Grange Hall Dance Studio isn't within the Village, so any land-line 911 calls from that location are rightfully going to go to OCSD. And do I remember correctly from the OCSD presentation that cell phone calls (even some cell calls made from within the Village) get routed to OCSD first already?"

Ryan Bladzik says: "holly2003, I'm sorry I didn't understand your question in the way you intended. When someone makes a call that OCS dispatch handles, there's a great deal of information that the call-takers get before the caller even speaks. If it's a landline, they have the address listing of that phone number. If it's a cell phone, they know the tower that call originated from, and within seconds the actual physical location of that cell phone within meters. So if they get a call, they're going to know what community/area the call is coming from right away, and because they have a second professional on radio dispatch, they can get a unit out while they're still receiving more detailed information from the caller, or allowing them to give pre-arrival instructions or medical information. I can't speak to the situation you described, but if you're willing to email me more details of the incident at rbladzik@hollyvillage.org, I'm more than happy to research the details to understand it better."

Janet Leslie says: "In my very brief time on the DDA board I suggested moving DDA committee meetings to a consistent evening of the week, to make participation on the committees more convenient to the majority of community members, rather than catering to the scheduling needs of a very small group of people. As the number of committee volunteers is apparently continuing to shrink, I repeat that suggestion. At present, some committee meetings are held during the day, some at night, and some are conducted primarily via email. If a person wanted to assist in planning, it would be difficult to know where and when to show up to volunteer."

holly2003 says: "hughes,,, I'm sorry buy Ryan didnt not understand what I was trying to say, I'm saying that landmarkers only work when given to a person that knows where that landmarker is at. when you call oakland co dispatch and give them hungry howies they dont know where that is at so are they really going to be able to sned the right department, i have called 911 when a male was having a seizure at the plaza on fish lake rd address i know now is 3043 grange hall but at the time i gave the name of the dance studio, the dispatcher that i was on the phone with wouldnt send me help instead she had turned my call over to the holly dispatcher who had asked me my location and with the info i had she was able to give me a address and then advised me that she was turning me back to oakland co and would give them the address. why is it that it takes a small department to take the time to find a address when all they have is a few workers but this larger department dont take the time to help a person in need and just ships you off to someone else. Just something that I believe we as a Village would want to look at and see all the things that are going to change in sending help to people in need.... Ryan if a dispatcher sends out a unit and the dispatcher doesnt know where its at how are they going to know what department to send to that call,, thats what i mean by landmarkers,"

SandraKay says: "Having been involved with LNO since the very beginning they vary every year. Weather is usually not the biggest factor because November is usually cold and rainy. I know a lot of friends who forgot about it, didn't know about it or had too many other things going on. The merchants shouldn't depend on the DDA to do their advertising for them. Everyone should have been doing email blasts to their regulars so everyone knew when it would be."

GoldenMama says: "I get evaluations at my job every 6 months and my employer never tells me when they are doing them. I only find out the results after. You should be doing your best work all the time, not only at evaluation time, but sadly many people only do the job correctly when they think someone is watching. I see nothing wrong with someone being evaluated without their knowledge. Take the evaluation and instead of pointing fingers, use it to see where you can improve and have it be motivation to do better."

neighbor says: "I have been to the last two, the November one with many friends but last May with only one and this time my friends and I just couldn't make it. I agree with Wendy but not just due to weather but also Mother's Day weekend also pulls families in many other directions, I think early June maybe a better option-also start a little later giving Dad's time to get home from work and take the kids so it truly is a Ladies Night Out. However if the attitude of bittersweet is so negative and quick to blame others maybe that's why his place saw less visitors and other eating and drinking establishments saw better traffic."

Treasure says: "I love Hope!! Please don't chase her out of town!! She and I worked together on designing the beautiful postcards very early, and Griselda had sent them as soon as they were printed. It's a mystery why some were not received on time. The Grey Lady project ate up the funds that would have been available to support more advertising for Ladies Night Out. It was SO COLD, and there were many complaints that there were no parking spaces, so many may have come and turned around and went home because there was no place to park. Blackthorne was busy all evening. If the new restaurant was open, they would have been doing well too. My impression is that people are not spending money on furniture and knick knacks these days. Food, drinks and socializing are a more valuable investment of time and money."

Songbird says: "It was obvious to me that the weather was the biggest part of attendance being down on the street. That certainly was not something Hope had no control over. When the weather is cold, windy, damp and dismal, of course no one wants to wander the area! They are going to want to go someplace warm and cozy and get something hot to eat or drink. Looks to me like the restaurants enjoyed a surge in business for obvious reasons. If the weather would have been beautiful, there would have been a lot more people out and about....and that is something that Hope does not have control over, so let's not make her take the heat over the weather conditions, if you'll pardon the pun."

Ryan Bladzik says: "holly2003, you do raise good points, but it's important to remember that any changes to our dispatch services is not a change to the police, first responders or firefighters we have in the community. They are still working here each and every day, and their knowledge of where things are in the Village, regardless of whether they are provided a hard address or not, is not diminished. So, in your example, our responders should know where Hungry Howies is and be able to get there in no less time whether it was an OCS dispatcher receiving that minimal information or a Village dispatcher (this is also the same case as a commenter mentioned above about the party store...even without a hard address NOCFA knew where it was and arrived within their average dispatch time)."

holly2003 says: "Mr Hughes, I thank you for ur time to respond, its just hard to believe that they are willing to take our village calls for the price they are saying, and them not upping the price if the call volume goes up. its hard to see our Village Dispatch to go to another department and lose the people that know where landmarkers are at if we had something and didnt know what the address is. for exp, say a car accident happened in the area of hungry howies which we know is saginaw and hubble because we live in the area and drive passed it everyday. but oakland co might not know where hungry howies is so there fore the response time is going to take longer cause the subject doesnt know the address to where they are at this point... just something to really think about."

Frank Sweeney says: "By golly, I agree, Linus. That’s what I was thinking after reading all of these comments. Why would a director for the city mislead the council members, and why aren’t they mad as hell about it? Seems to me the question asked by the council man was fairly straight forward and Mr. Klassen’s answer was not truthful. At a time when all of us residents young and old alike are struggling to pay our water and sewer bills, buying another pick up truck for a department that could get by without another one is insulting! Transparency, Mr. Hughes? Don’t kid a kidder. The fact that all this information came out on a newspaper commenting system tells all of us it was quite the opposite."

HollyRes says: "Talk about being penny wise and dollar stupid! If Mr. Lauve, or any other delusional buyer doesn't meet the deadlines set forth by the council to complete any work on this dump, I can just about imagine how long it would take the council to act, and how many legal bills might come along with it. The council is already wasting tax payers money by sitting on it, and if they would just listen to the voice of those who elected them, they would realize that very few people want to continue to look at this place another day. This "gem" has no redeeming features any longer. The previous owner and the owners before that let the home fall apart and most, if not all of the original architecture was scrapped long ago. Not even the original windows are in place. Why restore a building that has no original features left??
Jasper Fineren says: "It is very interesting to read over all the comments here and realize so many people are so passionate about our little community. Even people who no longer reside in the area still have an interest. I commend all of you who took time to respond. That being said, these public forums also give us an opportunity to see the inner workings of our local government. No one is perfect, people make mistakes, are ill informed and yet there is so much name calling and bitterness here. Watching things unfold in these comments, I especially dislike seeing people being so cruel and rude. You can make your point without being so vicious. We are so lucky to have this paper to inform us of the goings on in our little community. Like or hate a topic, its reporting the facts as they are presented. If then more facts come out in the comments, then all the better for all of us who live and pay to live in this area. Its troublesome to see personal attacks being made although it shows just how invested so many of you are. But try and take it down a notch, people. It might help if those commenting where not so defensive, and if every word reported was not scrutinized. I am unhappy about the cost of water and as a retiree, have been forced to limit usage. I yearn for the day when my water bill will not be over $50 a month before I even turn on the spigot. In the meanwhile, I too am very curious about how the council spends and will continue to be watching and hopeful."

Jason M Hughes says: "Linus... Again you are making a false statement. The "old truck" is vehicle #602. The director's current vehicle is #600. The "old truck" didn't acquire 86,000 miles from Director Klaassen driving it back and forth to work because it wasn't assigned to Director Klaassen. It isn't a matter of being clueless sir. It is a matter of transparency and sharing the truth instead of spreading malicious rumors and false information. The vehicle mileage was provided as part of the department reports in councils March 26th, 2013 packets which are available to the public."

addnurse says: "I don't claim to know how the EMS system works;the woman who called 911 from the parking lot told me that they didn't get there for 10 minutes. She said that they were 2 minutes down the road from the fire station and they should have gotten there much sooner, except that the dispatcher she spoke didn't have a clue where Grange Hall and Fish Lake Rd. is.Thank God another customer in the store recognized him and started CPR or he wouldn't have survived at all. The address is still not on the front of the store, I mentioned it to the owners the other day and they may be putting up address numbers. The EMS guys were great, they defibrillated him three times to get him back, and got him to Genesys promptly. And I'm not being disingenuine, thank you;I've been dealing with the aftermath for almost a year now;it happened June 3,2012.And it would certainly be helpful to have dispatchers who know the area or can look it up..you're right, they should be looking other employment;this is a life and death job."

Linus says: "Well, what do you know about that... an anonymous person actually had some facts correct and the Village President (and I presume the rest of our distinguished council) was clueless about how the old truck got all the miles on it, necessitating replacement. In my job, I also have to respond at all hours to "emergencies", but that is part of my job. My company does not provide me with a brand new pick-up truck to do my job. The $26,000, when added to the $120,000 backhoe, could indeed make a dent in the bonds. More so than a spending spree. Just because someone put something in a budget does not mean that it MUST be spent this way. Our council should be reviewing all of this and acting the best interest of the residents."

amayhew says: "Actually, Lee, I'm told that Ms. Leslie did speak with Jerry Walker last week over the issue. With so much debate going on about this, I called Mr. Walker today and asked him directly. It turns out that it's true - per his contract with the village of Holly, DPW Director Brian Klaassen will indeed drive the new truck to and from work from his residence. Per Jerry Walker, there are three administrators for the village of Holly that get to drive village vehicles after hours - Mr. Klaassen, Chief Mike Story, and Chief Steve McGee. The reasoning behind it, according to Mr. Walker, is that these individuals are oftentimes called in after hours for village issues. Mr. Klaassen did say in the meeting that the truck would not be driven to and from work by "water employees" but Mr. Walker explained that Mr. Klaassen was referring to his employees, not himself."

C. Rankin says: "Thanks, Ryan. I knew that the location was just outside Village limits, but I was under the impression that Township calls were still routed through Holly's Dispatch center, but that State Police (or other necessary responders) were contated by Village Dispatch to respond. However, Holly Dispatch was not being outsourced when this terrible situation occurred, so while I understand the parallel being drawn, to blame it on "outsourcing our EMS" is a little disingenuine. That situation was not caused by outsourcing (nor will it be spared from happening again in the future if Dispatch is kept in-house), it occurred partially because Township emergency calls don't go through Village Dispatch, and partially because of a dispatcher that was unfamiliar with the area. However, within 10 seconds I can type "Grange Hall and Fish Lake Rd" into Google Maps and get a location. Any dispatcher that can't do the same should be looking for other employment."

Ryan Bladzik says: "The party store described at Grange Hall Rd. and Fish Lake Rd. is in the Township, not within the Village limits. I guess I'd have to wonder why the owner or clerk at the party store didn't know the address, or why someone didn't go out and look at the address on the building? I'd also question why NOCFA's EMS responders wouldn't know where a party store on Grange Hall Rd. is...there are only two, one in each direction from Station 1, and even general proximity would narrow it down. As we consider the pros and cons of shifting Village dispatch to OCS, when we are offered anecdotal evidence like this, we should take extra effort to inquire and understand all of the details and circumstances."

I'll tell you my personal experience;my fiance and I live in the Village of Holly. One night last year, he had a cardiac arrest 1/2 mile from home at a party store and it took ten minutes for EMS to get there because the caller didn't know the street address of the party store, and the outsourced dispatcher was unfamiliar with the intersection of Grange Hall Rd and Fish Lake Rd. Due to this time delay,he was down for ten minutes without oxygen, and now has a permanent brain injury; gotta LOVE outsourcing our EMS guys!!!!!!!!!!!"

GoldenMama says: "While I agree fully that government should be scrutinized and that no person is flawless, I don't see anything wrong with supporting the things you agree with. I have spent more than 30 years in this town and while I agree that there is much that needs to be changed, I think the disagreement just seems to be involving how that change occurs. I don't think anyone wants to see Holly sit stagnate. However, not all change is good change either. Our current officials for the most part are doing the best they can to handle the issues as they arise. There is a way to show solidarity in your community without being a blind follower. Nobody wants blind followers. And in return, we shouldn't necessarily question things simply to question them. The status quo does have it's place, if for no other reason than fluidity and ease of function. Resorting to personal attacks, name calling and condescension is no way to carry on a productive dialogue. It seems you all have a similar goal of wanting a "better Holly." Perhaps it is best if you all just agree to disagree on the method and focus on the final result?"

Janet Leslie says: "Tony E., your self-confidence is beyond impressive. However, as you are new to community involvement, I beg you to refrain from dismissing the opinions of those who have not attended the latest meeting. Many good people who comment here have attended more than their share of meetings and may be a step or two ahead of you in the depth of their understanding of local issues. As for your obsession with "real names," allow me to share a short story. When I had my own blog, "The Holly Post," I had an anonymous commenter who went by the name Silence Dowell. There were those who were absolutely convinced that I was Silence. I was not. But insisting that I was not this person only led my accusers to persist, even accusing me of having conversations with myself on my own blog. In the end, what matters most is not who said what, but whether we use the dialog to examine issues to improve the community. One more thing. I'll write this one off to your inexperience, but you should know that the office of Oakland County Sheriff is an elected position. The OCSO is indeed a political organization. Those of us who have had direct discussions with them are quite clear on this point. Good luck to you."

Tony E. says: "Amy.. in the end... adults need to act like adults. Message forums like this bring out both some of the best and worst in people. You can't force someone who has no integrity or morals in real life to behave with those values on a forum. Peter.. As I said.. I really have zero interest in discussing anything with you. On the facebook thing.. Joe is right. I use it because it greatly benefits my business but if it wasn't for that..
Joe says: "It's just not realistic. What "real name" are people looking for? For those of us that only supply a first name, it's no different than those that use an alias. "Tony E." provides a first name and an initial along with a picture and website address for his business so with a little digging you can see who he is or at least portrays to be. "Peter Clemens" provides his full name, but how do we really know that it's really "Peter Clemens"? If someone showed up with the name "Larry Lilly", would we really know that's it's the infamous "Larry Lilly"? It's the Internet, take everything with a grain of salt. I don't expect Amy to implement some kind of TSA-like identification process. Maybe I'm naïve but I really don't know that I believe people are setting up multiple accounts to provide support for their comments. I like to think that I focus on the content of the comment, not the screen name attached to it. Despite all of this, I like the commenting system as there's a lot of information to derive from it; it's just a matter of trying to filter it."

Joe says: "Amy- While I greatly appreciate what you do, the above is not correct. If you spend time reading comments on freep.com and detnews.com (both use Facebook), you'll see that the majority of Facebook accounts are not actual users but clearly pseudonyms. There have been studies done showing that there are more fake accounts on Facebook than real accounts. As popular as it is, I don't use Facebook as the lack of privacy is astounding. I also try to avoid Google services as they are also large violators of privacy. I'm sure it sounds a bit tinfoil-hat to some but this is a field I work in and I see where it's going. These services are all free for a reason, they're subsidized by advertising with the goal of building the most complete profile possible of their target. So you'll lose one "anonymous commenter" (me) but changing to Facebook won't solve the anonymous comments completely."

Tony E. says: "Peter, First of all let me congratulate you for being able to post here in a more professional manner than you do elsewhere. However having seen that other side of you previously, it becomes not worth my time for me to engage you in any sort of discussion. It is what it is, you handle things one way and I do so in a different way. We'll agree on some issues, disagree on others but rarely agree on the method of approach or delivery. I can live with that. You are no longer in office because the voters decided it was time for a change. I was one of them. At this point to me and unless the voters elect you...should you choose to run again...you are part of the past...a past that in my opinion was leading Holly in the wrong direction... and I am working to be a part of the future. So your apology for your throw is accepted with that understanding."

Jason M Hughes says: "Linus and holly2003... Why is it that you think the truck is being used as a commuter vehicle for DPW employees? I only ask because this question was asked at the council meeting. The answer was that employees are not driving the vehicles home. Please provide clarification as to why you believe these vehicles are being driven home by DPW employees. If council was misinformed than I think it is imperative to share those details so that we can follow up on those concerns. As for the concerns about vehicles for the PD and FD... These have been topics of consideration at the budget worksessions. The budget is available for anyone to review. Council meetings, budget worksessions, committee meetings... these are all open to the public. I can only speak for myself, but I am not taking anything. I am not asking for anything. I am not plotting evil plans. I haven't claimed to be something I am not and I haven't made a promise that I haven't kept. Each member of council is a resident, taxpayer and water and sewer customer just like everyone else so it stands to reason that we desire the best possible services for our taxes and service fees just like everyone else."

Not posting somebody's comment required me to send a follow up email explaining why...it just got too much for me to do with all the other stuff I have to do to keep this website running. The next version of THE (which will be coming out soon) will do away with this type of blog format and will be run entirely through Facebook, thus eliminating the capability for anybody to post anonymous comments."

Tony E. says: "It doesn't surprise me that you agree with the thoughts of another Anon who has made a statement that is about 70% false and 30% opinion/accusation based on the false statements. I notice a pattern here."

Village council discusses outsourcing dispatch services

Tony E. says: "I guess I have a bigger problem with the potential ability for people to create multiple accounts and using them to talk to themselves and spread false and misleading information. Especially when they also could occasionally post under a real name and then use fake names to "back up" their comments. I wish Amy would require real names and use things like IP verification to make sure people are not abusing the system but she has a life and probably little time to deal with childish nonsense. If you wish to hide behind a fake name I will choose not to take your comments seriously. Especially when those comments are typically not based in any sort of fact and are often simply attacks at decisions made by the council. Perhaps you are a disgruntled former council member whose time has passed, perhaps you have a personal issue with someone on the council. Perhaps you are just misinformed. Who knows? Since you make the choice to hide, I can assume which of the above is correct, but since I can't be sure, I can't have any sort of real discussion with you (or any of the other anons who sound alike) about the issues. I don't always agree with council. For example I recently stated my displeasure that bids for demolition of 101 could not be accepted at the same time as the bids for restoration. To me there is no reason both can't be handled at the same time to expedite whatever result will eventually take place. But I put my name (and face) to those statements and got some answers to my concerns. Granted I don't totally agree with those answers but at least our elected and village officials were willing to listen and respond to my concerns. They will do that for anyone who is willing to take the time to contact them. A true benefit of living in a small village. Trust but verify I agree with. That is why I suggest people attend meetings and ask questions...and not take the "opinions" of someone hiding behind a fake name too seriously."
