Springfield Parks and Recreation director explains millage proposal Print
Thursday, July 29 2010 8:28 am

On Aug. 3, 2010, Springfield Township residents will be asked to vote on a .75 millage for four years to support parks and recreation in our community. Currently, the Parks and Recreation Department is funded by the Springfield Township general fund.

With state tax and property tax revenue continuing to decline, the township board faces an increasingly difficult funding decision each year.  Even with a reduction in the Parks and Recreation budget during each of the last several years, the department continues to provide important services, programs and events for our community, while maintaining over 550 acres of parkland.  The park system includes four parks that contain athletic fields, a community center, a beach and environmentally significant parkland which is home to many endangered and special concern species.

HOLLY, Michigan – On Aug. 9, members of the Holly Downtown Development Authority Board of Directors received all the facts and figures pertaining to a study performed on the village offices by Bloomfield Hills redevelopment services firm, The Urban Resource Alliance.

The original concept for the study was set in motion in October of 2009 by Suzanne Perreault, former director of the Holly DDA. After the village of Holly was awarded a $30,000 50/50 Michigan Economic Development Corporation grant, Perreault said the MDEC had agreed to pay the first $15,000 of the study, while Oakland County volunteered to throw in another $5,500. At the time, both the village and the DDA agreed split another $5,000 to go toward the study, leaving $4,500 to hopefully be paid by area banks and businesses.

“I choose free libraries as the best agencies for improving the masses of the people, because they give nothing for nothing. They only help those who help themselves."

--- Andrew Carnegie

Everyone knows Michigan’s economy is in a slump and now registered voters of Holly Township are being asked to renew a millage to support the library.  Should we do this?  Can we afford to renew the millage at a cost of an average $65 per household?  I’d like to present a few facts and try to persuade you to pull the YES lever next Tuesday at the polls at Holly High School.
