HOLLY TOWNSHIP, Michigan – Next weekend’s circus in Holly will provide local gardeners the opportunity to take home free elephant manure.

According to gardeners, elephant dung is held in a high, almost mystical regard as fertilizer. The dung giveaway will take place at noon on Sunday, Aug. 15 on N. Holly Road adjacent to the First Baptist Church near Quick Road and will last until the manure is gone. Willing participants in the dung giveaway are asked to bring a shovel and a suitable container. Asian elephants contribute about 4 cubic yards of poop per day – enough to fill the bed of an oversized truck.

HOLLY, Michigan – Ten concerned residents expressed their opinions regarding district budget reductions at the Holly Area Schools Board of Education meeting Monday, March 29. Most urged the school board to cut no further than the $2.4 million proposed March 15 by Superintendent Kent Barnes.

“We teachers have pretty much accepted Mr. Barnes’ recommendations because we were involved in the process,” Mike Therriault said. In addition to teaching at the high school, Therriault serves as president of the Holly Education Association, Holly’s teachers’ union. Therriault cited several instances in which Barnes provided faculty and community members the opportunity to share suggestions for the budget reductions. “Let’s give our kids the best education we can for the dollars we have today,” he said in support of Barnes’ proposal to use $1 million from the district’s fund equity.
