HOLLY, Michigan – More than 40 canoes and kayaks took part in Sunday’s sixth annual Holly to Fenton Canoe race – some taking part in the race, and others, just paddling for the fun of it.

Before the Expert Division took off, Holly Township Supervisor Jesse Lambert took the opportunity to welcome racers. “Thank you for all coming out today,” Lambert said. “It’s a little rainy today, but it’s a beautiful stretch of river from here to Fenton – enjoy!”

Three teams participated in the Expert Division of the race, while another 3 teams made up the Novice/Youth category. The Single Person Canoe/Kayak Division consisted of and 7 teams, while over 20 pleasure paddlers brought up the rear.

HOLLY, Michigan – It’s hard to keep track of Robin Barnes’ whereabouts these days as she has criss-crossed the globe from country to country over the past eight months. In the process, Barnes says she’s having a life-changing experience as she takes part in The World Race, an 11-month, 11-country mission trip with the ultimate goal of producing leaders for the next generation.

Barnes, 23, is a 2005 graduate of Holly High School and a 2009 graduate of Central Michigan University. She said she made the decision to join the World Race after reading about the organization in a magazine.

After going online and reading what current racers were blogging, Barnes said she began to realize that the trip would be the next logical step. “Complacency can, at times, be a problem in the American church, and this trip is designed to combat that,” Barnes said.

HOLLY, Michigan – It sounded just like any other championship basketball game from outside of the gymnasium doors, but inside it was quite a different story. With brightly painted faces and pom poms thrust high into the air, students from 19 Oakland County high schools cheered as they watched their classmates put their respective “robogladiators” to the test, going head to head in a game called “Bot Basketball.”

On Saturday, the Holly High School Robotics Team and 18 other teams from Oakland County took part in the last competition of the year, the Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association Championship – a full contact game of basketball played with 120- pound robogladiators.

OCCRA promotes excitement for technical and academic disciplines such as design, engineering, physics and electronics. The competition recognizes and encourages all students who sacrifice all their free time to this area of study.

Holly High School robotic students combine with students from Brandon High School to make up Team 43 – a team known for its competitive spirit, outstanding sportsmanship conduct, and hard-working members.

HOLLY, Michigan – In the weeks leading up to Mother’s Day, several members of the Downtown Holly Merchants rallied together to hold the “Whoz Your Mama” essay contest. Participants ages 9 to 14 taking part in the contest each paid $5 and submitted a short essay describing why their mom is the best.

Of those essays received, it was Megan Durgan, 14 and a student of Sherman Middle School winning for her heartfelt description of her mama, Michelle Durgan:

“Intelligent, funny, caring; these are just three of the hundreds of words I could use to describe my mom. My mom always takes pride in anything I do and any dreams I achieve. Although I have a lot of goals I strive to reach in life, she is the first person to give me support and cheer me on. My mom is always there to comfort me when I have a bad day, and to listen to all the stories I have to share when I have a good one. Together we have many great memories, whether it’s watching her favorite show, “Judge Judy,” taking our vacation to Washington D.C., or jamming to Kenny Chesney in the car. My mom and I have a lot of great times together. I might not always show my appreciation for her, but in just a few simple words I can express all of my gratitude: I love you, Mom.”
