Over the past several months, the Holly Area Chamber of Commerce has endured everything from minor implications to out-and-out negative comments regarding its lack of support for Holly festivals, specifically the Carry Nation and Dickens festivals. The time has come, I believe, for the record to be set straight.

Although I am a member of the Holly Village Council, and serve as president of the Holly Area Chamber of Commerce, the following are the facts as I personally recall them. I am speaking on my own behalf, not that of the council or chamber board.

HOLLY, Michigan – After nearly 8 months without a director, Holly’s Downtown Development Authority once again has a person at its helm – Holly resident, Hope Ponsart.

Ponsart replaces former DDA Director Suzanne Perreault who resigned from the village of Holly last January after accepting the DDA director position in Lake Orion.

Ponsart, 48, moved to Holly with her husband, Tom 5 years ago and said it was Holly’s rural appeal that lured the couple from Royal Oak. “We wanted to be in the country – to have more space,” Ponsart said. “I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts so that aspect of Holly really appeals to me, too.”

HOLLY, Michigan – It was difficult for Dr. Noni Miller, superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the Holly Area Schools to contain herself during Monday’s Board of Education meeting as she informed board members that HAS students at all grade levels have in fact, achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status for 2010.

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is one of the cornerstones of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) signed into law January 2002, as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.

HOLLY, Michigan – Rain managed to hold off long enough on Saturday for the teams that make up Holly’s Little League Association to ring in Opening Day with style!

Led by the Holly Police Department, a colorful stream of uniform-clad players paraded from the Holly Post Office down Maple St. to the Karl Richter Campus for Opening Day ceremonies on the main field.

After teams assembled in the infield, Holly Little League Coordinator, John Copley welcomed the crowd of parents and players to the 2010 Holly Little League Opening Day.

Copley thanked the many sponsors for making the day and the season possible, before asking players to recite the Little League Pledge.

HOLLY, Michigan – Holly’s village chambers were packed Tuesday evening as many members of the community came out to learn the fate of Village Manager Marsha Powers.

Powers came under fire this week after council members realized that the village of Holly was in court last week regarding three sets of unfair labor practice charges filed by village workers belonging to Teamsters Local 214. While Village President Pete Clemens said Powers had briefed him prior to last week’s proceedings, other council members said they had limited information, or has absolutely no knowledge of the hearing until after the fact.
