HOLLY TOWNSHIP, Michigan – Back by popular demand, the Friends of the Holly Township Library are pleased to offer a 3-part workshop for Holly High School juniors and seniors on how to write exceptional essays for scholarships and college applications.

Last year, six HHS students took advantage of the workshop and had nothing but positive comments to make in an exit survey. In addition to providing positive feedback about the content and format of the course, all students agreed that they would recommend the course to fellow students, and felt better-prepared to search and apply for scholarships.

“I feel so much more confident about scholarships,” one student wrote. “I finally understand what I have to do and how to do it,” wrote another.

Vicky Dawson, an educator from the University of Michigan, Flint will once again teach the 3-part workshop at the Holly Township Public Library, 1116 Saginaw St., Holly, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30 to a class of up to 18 participants.

In addition to presenting this course to Holly students in the past, Dawson has presented the course to students from Grand Blanc, Fenton and Davison as well. While in college, Dawson was the recipient of thousands of dollars in scholarship money due, in part, to her award-winning essays.

Sharing her tips, tricks and techniques, Dawson helps students to understand what scholarship committees are looking for so that the student can write a winning essay.  Additionally, Dawson provides information on local scholarships that are available to Holly students, as well as where students may find other applications for additional scholarship money.

The workshop is divided into three parts with the first week covering wheres and whats of scholarship searching. During this session, students will be asked to create a personal profile, and begin a rough draft of their individual essays. Part two of the workshop gives the students the time to further work on their drafts, gaining Dawson’s insight and knowledge in the process. The final segment of the workshop will be spent polishing the draft, and checking it for grammar, trouble spots, and red flags.

Cost of the 3-part workshop is just $15 per student. Those interested are asked to register with the Holly Township Library at (248) 634-1754. A $25 gas card will be raffled off to students attending all sessions.
