Drugs 101: What Parents Need T...

HOLLY, Michigan – Parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches and administrators are invited to attend “Drugs 101: What Parents Need to Know,” a seminar sponsored by the Holly Area Youth Coalition aimed in educating folks about various forms of drugs and the peer pressures facing students to use them.

Educators from the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System will lead the 2-hour presentation as participants enter a mock bedroom of a teenager that has been set up to resemble a teenage drug user’s room. Those attending will be asked to identify drug and alcohol related paraphernalia that has been placed around the room.

Throughout the presentation, 70 trendy drug and alcohol indicators will be unveiled to show how some adolescents hide drug and alcohol use.

Signs, symptoms and current trends of alcohol, prescription drugs, marijuana, inhalants, tobacco, and several other substances will be discussed. The program will include demonstrations to help adults initiate conversations with adolescents and teens.

The goal of this program is to empower participants with the knowledge they need to spot warning signs of drug abuse in time to intervene and/or prevent it.

The program is free and open to the entire community, and will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 in the Karl Richter Campus auditorium, 920 Baird St., Holly. For more information, contact the HAYC office at (248) 328-3135.

Three cheers to the HAYC for arranging this program!! It has been very well received in other communiies and found to be most informative..I think everyone would profit from attending! Anything we as a community can do to help our youth is a benefit to us all.

What an awesome program this was to see! There was tons of good information, lessons on reading the tell-tale signs of drug use and (for me anyhow) an update on some of the current lingo and not-so-obvious items that can be used as drug paraphernalia.

I was, however, shocked that less than a dozen parents showed up. There were literally 11 people in the audience.

How sad this great program was so poorly attended! I wonder if the info got out to parents thru the schools? Hard to believe so few parents would choose not to attend something so informative and important in protecting our youth.

It was put out in the community and sent home with all the parents through flyers/newsletters and Mr. Barnes sent out a community reminder so it was put out there through the schools but I guess it was a bad night for people to come out. Too bad because it really is a good program for parents to see.

I agree that it is sad that this program was so poorly attended. The Holly Area Community Coalition works very hard to make sure their events are promoted through a variety of venues. Unfortunately, it seems that although many may see the notices, they choose not to attend. This program has been offered for the past 4 consecutive years, and each year the people who attend rave at how interesting and informative it was. It is unfortunate that more people aren't receiving this information.
