ROSE TOWNSHIP, Michigan – A Rose Township family is safe and sound after North Oakland County Fire Authority emergency crews extinguished a fire in the chimney area of their West Braemar Drive home on Oct. 29.

Chief Jeremy Lintz said fire crews arrived on the scene at 8:26 p.m., and determined that the fire had extended from the chimney into the attic area of the 4,000 square foot two-story home. Lintz said the fire had already burned through the roof of the home, adjacent to the chimney.

High winds pushed the fire quickly through the attic area as fire crews breached the ceiling of an upstairs bedroom to access the attic fire. Lintz said a second fire crew accessed the roof from the outside, helping to quickly bring the blaze under control by 8:40 p.m.

Because NOCFA fire crews were able to manage the fire so quickly, fire crews from Springfield and Groveland Townships, the village of Holly and Fenton that were already en route to the fire were cancelled.

Lintz said the home sustained heavy damage to the roof area in immediate proximity to the chimney, and that a third of the living area within the home sustained water damage.

While the family was home during the time of the fire, they were unaware of it until a neighbor from across the lake saw the flames, and informed them that the house was on fire.

The fire appears to have been accidental, however the cause is still under investigation. Lintz said all fire units cleared the scene at 11 p.m.
