HOLLY, Michigan - Participation in Tuesday's primary election was fairly low, with most area precincts reporting a 10-20 percent voter turn out. Several precincts in Springfield and Rose Townships, however, reported a 30-40 percent voter turnout. Either way, the voters have spoken, electing new people in some municipalities, and leaving things the way are in others.

HOLLY TOWNSHIP
Clerk Karin Winchester will be Holly Township’s clerk for another four years after voters overwhelmingly re-elected her to the position during Tuesday’s primary election.

Winchester received 686 votes over her challenger Beverly Lauinger’s 353 votes.

Treasurer Mark Freeman also prevailed on Tuesday, receiving 564 votes over challenger Debra Musgrave’s 459 votes.

In November, Republican George Kullis, and Democrat Dale Smith will face off for the township supervisor position, while Trustees Janet Leslie, Steve Ruth and Democratic hopeful Mark Cornwell will compete for two township trustee positions.

ROSE TOWNSHIP

It was somewhat of an upset in Rose Township as supervisor challenger Paul Gambka defeated Interim Supervisor Glen Noble by a margin of just 39 votes. Noble was appointed in December of 2011 to serve as Rose Township’s interim supervisor following former Supervisor Alison Kalcec’s resignation.

While Clerk Debbie Miller won the privilege of serving the residents of Rose Township for another four years by beating challenger Pat Walls soundly by 340 votes, Treasurer Sue Slaughter was sent into lame duck status by challenger Trish Trevethan. Trevethan edged Slaughter in a vote of 575 to Slaughter’s 569.

Republican Trustee Dianne Scheib-Snider and newcomer Tom Kemp will face off with Democratic hopeful Tom Wilwerth for two trustee slots on the November ballot.

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP

Interim Supervisor Collin Walls made it official on Tuesday after defeating challengers Ginny Fischbach and Steve Kovacs, III by a sizable margin.  Walls earned 1,079 votes over Fischbach’s 773 votes.

Treasurer Jamie Dubre will serve another four years after defeating newcomer Rita Hawes, 1,037 votes to Hawes’ 849.

Newcomer Marc Cooper will join trustees Judy Hensler, Dave Hopper and Dennis Vallad on the Springfield Township Board of Trustees.

Police Millage

Springfield Township taxpayers will be paying .75 mills for the next four years to ensure that the township retains the current level of police services provided by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.  In a vote of 1,586 to 1,092, voters opted to pay the increase.

GROVELAND TOWNSHIP

Trustee Hal Coxon will give up his seat on the Groveland Board of Trustees in November after challenger Dale Cason and Trustee Diane Howell came up with more votes. Cason was the overall vote-getter, receiving 396 votes, while Howell received 359.

Well, I wonder if Susan Slaughter is going to step aside gracefully or are the residents of Rose Twp going to have to deal with her whining and boohooing for a recount?? I guess this is what happens when you don't come to work for over a year, but yet still get paid.

I am shocked that Sue Slaughter lost by 6 votes. How she didn't lose in a landslide is beyond me.

I am sure the new treasure will do a good job. If she shows up for work every day she will be an improvement. But more importantly she won't bring the mean spirited personal agenda Slaughter and her tools pushed.

The fact that I support the incumbant sen stabanow Is cause to prevent my casting any vote for Holly twp clerk or the position of treasurer. Partision ballots prevent the
demacratic process
