HOLLY, Michigan – In addition to the wonderful gazebo overlooking picturesque Bevins Lake, Ganshaw Park will soon have another focal point – a veterans memorial donated by the Holly American Legion.

Veteran and American Legion member Dan Stashko told council members that the concept had been approved by the Parks Commission in May, and that he was looking for council’s blessing to move forward with the project.

Stashko said the footprint for the monument will be 2-feet by 3-feet, and that a black granite monument imported from India will be positioned in front of the flagpole, with a concrete sidewalk or flagstones leading up to it.

The monument will contain etchings of all five branches of the service, with a POW/MIA emblem in the middle. “It will say ‘Dedicated to the memory of all who served in the United States armed forces,’” Stashko said. “The inscription, ‘You are not forgotten’ will appear below the emblems.”

Stashko said the total cost of the project - $4,000, will be assumed entirely by the Holly American Legion.

Council member Sandra Kleven made the motion to approve the new veterans’ monument at Ganshaw Park, and to waive any and all permit fees associated with the project. Council unanimously approved the motion.

Stashko said the goal is to have the monument in place by Veterans’ Day on Nov. 11, 2012.

What a wonderful tribute but I wonder, wouldnt it have made better sense to find a monument that was made in the USA??

Just to clarify - the monument itself is coming from a Michigan company. They just have to order the stone from India.

I live near Ganshaw and tend to walk my dog through the park frequently. Over the last several years, I've noticed a substantial increase in use of Ganshaw Park.

Mr. Stashko handled the presentation very well and the monument will be a great addition to our midtown area.

Best of luck to all involved and a very BIG Thank You.
